Note our 2024 Dahlia Pot Tubers will be listed in late February or early March. And note we can only ship dahlias to the USA. Apologies to our International friends; maybe next season.
If you haven’t seen our Facebook page, just search for River Road Flower Farm in Sequim, Washington.
2022 was a good year, and we had a very decent lavender crop. And a successful pot tuber crop.
We sold many of the fresh lavender “bundles” straight from the field. And we distilled thousands of bundles into pure lavender essential oil.
Lavender is a perfect gift. It is simple product, just pure naturally grown lavender buds. Carol makes sachets of buds that can be used as room fresheners. And the essential oil is steam distilled from pure buds here on the farm with nothing added and nothing taken away. We have prepared some nice assortments of lavender buds and oil that are well suited as gifts.
We have grown dahlias for over forty years. There was a time when we shipped dahlias around the world and grew many hundreds of varieties. We specialized in dahlias for the exhibition grower featuring the latest introductions. We learned to grow what the Europeans call “pot tubers”. Rather than planting the dahlia to the field, it spends its life confined to a pot such that it produces a compact tuber that ranges in size from a walnut to baseball size (we prefer the smaller ones as they are easier to ship). We never cut these tubers. Instead you get the entire “clump” complete with the smaller roots that let the dahlia take off quickly once dormancy is broken. We generally ship these in their pots and we include instructions on how to deal with them. Sometimes the pots are completely full of the tubers and hard to get our without cutting the pot off. And sometimes they are as small as a walnut or so. We have a 99% success rate with pot roots and of course guarantee your satisfaction.
These days we aren’t quite as focused on the latest varieties. Instead we look for dahlias that are American Dahlia Society prize winners in their class, with preference for the ones that are well suited for cut flowers, and the cultivars that are healthy. So instead of many hundreds of different varieties, we now grow no more than a hundred different cultivars. And this gives us a marvelous cut flower garden.
As we get time, we will scan in some of the old catalogs from the old Golden Rule Dahlia Farm that we operated in the 80s. It was the oldest dahlia farm in the country, in business since 1923. We have interesting catalogs that are almost a hundred years old. You will be surprised. We scanned the oldest one we have – 1929. Remember that 1929 was the beginning of the Great Depression. 1929-golden-rule-dahlia-farm-catalog
As to specifics about shipping, etc., we will never ship dahlias if there is any threat of freezing temperatures. And for now, only to the USA. Everything goes out via priority mail. We can take most credit cards, etc. We can even take Paypal and Venmo if you’re one of these modern young folks (give us a call for these payment options). And you can always call or write and send a check. Though I will comment that dahlias sell out quickly these days.
As to our prices, all the dahlias will be $10 for the 2024 season. Its true that some dahlias are harder to grow. And some yield poorly. Mostly that means we have to do a better job when we have a hard one. But we think that $10 is fair and it is enough for us.
And as it happens we have a handful of strong growing dahlia plants we grew from fall cuttings. Nice plants that will be quite large by time to go the field. We are selling these with some restrictions as they are a bit of a pain to deal with at this time of year. We can fit two in a box so they protect each other. And we will only accept orders from the Pacific Northwest or California due to the risks of freezing. These will be our first offerings. Ketchup & Mustard are two plants for $40 plus shipping. Harts Bonnie is two plants for $40 plus shipping. And we will offer one each for $40 plus shipping. Please note these are growing and it is the middle of February. Please don’t order if you don’t have a greenhouse.
Call if you wish, 800-860-1420 and leave a message (we kept that 800 number all these years, even though there is no such thing as long distance charges any more).
And please note that the web pages are a work in progress and we are not as fast as we were in years past. Our stock is all entered and some varieties are sold out already. But as time goes on, we may reevaluate our stock and add a few more. And we will continue to update the galleries with the old catalogs and items of historical interest.
